Liguastic vs British Council IELTS Ready (2026)

Take one learner, roughly B1, with a target of band 6.5 and a test booked in eight weeks; Monday looks different in each. She reads Arabic fluently, writes English slowly, and her last practice essay came back from a friend with the note “good, but improve grammar”.

With British Council IELTS Ready:

1. Monday she takes the 50-minute Mini Mock, which the comparison table lists on the free tier and which needs no booking and no payment. It returns estimated four-skill scores with AI feedback, in band terms, which is the language her university will use (IELTS preparation). Later that day she books her test with the British Council, which also unlocks IELTS Ready Premium at no extra cost.
2. Tuesday she opens one of the forty full mock tests. Reading and Listening are scored, with feedback on every question, and the writing task comes with a model answer to compare against (IELTS Ready Premium). This is the real format, written by a body that owns the exam.
3. Wednesday she writes a full Task 2 essay under the clock. To get a Writing score on it she uses the AI feedback upgrade the comparison table lists for a single mock test and packages; otherwise she compares her essay with the model answer and the published examiner comments herself (free Writing practice).
4. Thursday she works through the Speaking sample tasks for Parts 1, 2 and 3, and reads how responses are assessed across fluency, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. She does an hour of listening, which is the section she is weakest in and the one she can actually work on here.
5. Friday she joins a live expert webinar. She has done authentic, well-made work all week. What she does not have is a single verdict on the grammar in Wednesday's essay, sentence by sentence, or anything that will put Monday's mistake back in front of her next week.

With Liguastic:

1. Who owns the format

British Council: its recognition page states that IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English, and that examiners are fully qualified, trained and certified specialists.

2. What comes back on a full mock test

British Council: the familiarisation test page says “Get your Listening and Reading results for free. Writing and Speaking results are not available as these would be marked by a human in the real test”; the IELTS Ready comparison table lists full mock tests as Reading and Listening scores with model answers, two on the free tier and forty on Premium.

3. Where a Writing or Speaking score comes from

British Council: on a full mock test, from the AI feedback upgrade, listed as “included Writing and Speaking scores” for a single mock test on the free tier and for a single mock test and packages on Premium, while the free 50-minute Mini Mock already returns estimated four-skill scores with AI feedback; one country page prices detailed AI feedback for Writing and Speaking from $9.99 with the British Council.

4. How long access lasts

British Council: the free tier is listed as “Free forever”; Premium is listed as “Free from registration until 7 days after test date”, so it is preparation for one booked exam rather than an open subscription.

5. What happens to a mistake

British Council: feedback on every Reading and Listening question, a personalised study guide and progress tracking; the pages checked describe no schedule that returns a specific question you got wrong.

Liguastic: a lesson, practice or placement miss returns at 1, 3, 7 and 21 days as a fresh question on the same point, and essay and recording corrections wait in a notebook to re-read.

The proof: IELTS Ready Premium for what is described, and how it works for what Liguastic does. An absence on a marketing page is not proof of an absence in a product, so this one is written as what the pages say, not as a claim about the software.

The honest summary: the British Council owns the format and gives most of it away; Liguastic marks what you produce and schedules the return of what you got wrong.

For a large number of readers it simply is the better choice, and it costs nothing. Pick British Council IELTS Ready if:

• You want authentic material. IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English, so its sample tasks, model answers and examiner comments come from the source (why recognise IELTS, checked 6 September 2026). No independent platform can say that, and this page will not pretend otherwise.
• You are booking your exam with the British Council anyway. Premium comes with the booking at no extra cost, with forty full mock tests, courses in all four skills and on-demand webinars (IELTS Ready compared). One country page values that package at US$170 for a British Council test taker (British Council Ethiopia).
• You want to pay nothing at all. The free tier is listed as free forever and includes two full mock tests, short courses in Speaking and Listening and live webinars.
• Listening is your weak section. The British Council's free package includes short courses in Speaking and Listening, Premium adds practice by specific skill and question type, and its full mock tests score a whole Listening paper. Liguastic measures listening at placement and practises it from a bank of approved clips at your level, but it teaches no lesson, sets no Listening paper, and the bank is finite.
• You want a full four-section mock under exam conditions. Premium lists forty of them. Liguastic has no full four-section mock: its reading mock is one passage of up to ten questions in fifteen minutes, and Exam Day pairs that with a timed essay.

Before the verdict, the limits.

• Listening is practised from a fixed bank, not taught. It is measured at placement, and afterwards you are dealt clips a person approved, at your level: play each as often as you like, your answers are marked on our side and the script comes afterwards. There are no listening lessons, no full Listening paper, and it does not move your CEFR level; because the clips are approved rather than generated, the bank can run out.

• There is no full four-section mock. Reading is one passage, up to ten questions, fifteen minutes, on a fixed ratio ladder shared by every track, which makes it a reading-accuracy estimate. Exam Day pairs that reading mock with a timed essay and returns one combined estimate.

British Council IELTS Ready does its job well and gives most of it away. IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English (why recognise IELTS, checked 6 September 2026), so the practice papers are the format rather than an imitation of it. The free tier is listed as free forever with a 25-minute Express Mock, a 50-minute Mini Mock with estimated four-skill scores and AI feedback, two full mock tests with Reading and Listening scores and model answers, short courses in Speaking and Listening and live webinars. Book the exam with the British Council and Premium adds forty full mock tests, courses in all four skills, progress tracking, a personalised study guide and on-demand webinars, free from registration until seven days after the test date (IELTS Ready compared).

Its limits for this reader are specific and its own pages state them. Full mock tests are scored for Reading and Listening; the familiarisation test says Writing and Speaking results are not available there because in the real test a person marks them. Writing and Speaking scores come from an AI feedback upgrade, listed for a single mock test on the free tier, and priced separately on at least one British Council country page. Premium access ends seven days after your exam. And the pages checked describe no schedule that brings a question you got wrong back to you.

The bottom line: Use British Council IELTS Ready for authentic papers, listening and a full mock, especially once you have booked with them. Use Liguastic when you want every essay and recording marked and a plan written from a measured level.

There is nothing to migrate, and no reason to choose only one. Liguastic imports nothing from any other tool, and it does not need to: the first thing it does is measure you.
