Streets in the shade

City planners once treated street trees as decoration. A growing body of research suggests they are closer to infrastructure. In one large European study, streets with mature tree cover were measurably cooler in summer — by as much as four degrees — than bare streets nearby, which reduced the energy spent on cooling the buildings along them. Trees also intercept rainfall, easing the load on drainage systems during storms.

The benefits are not evenly spread, however: older districts tend to have far denser canopies than newer ones, an imbalance that can take decades to correct, because the cooling depends on mature crowns rather than freshly planted saplings. Some researchers therefore argue that tree budgets should be treated like road budgets: as long-term capital spending, not beautification.
