IELTS for UK doctors: the GMC bands you need for PLAB and registration (2026)

The GMC reads your English through one certificate, and it sets five conditions on it before it will count: the Academic version, 7.0 in every skill, 7.5 overall, one test, and your most recent sitting. All five are on the GMC's page on using an IELTS certificate, and each one closes a route that doctors sometimes assume is open.

The version of the test

The GMC accepts the Academic version of IELTS, including IELTS for UKVI, taken in person, taken as IELTS Online, or completed through IELTS One Skill Retake. It does not accept the IELTS Indicator test. General Training is not the Academic version, so a General Training result does not meet the GMC's criteria however high it is. If you are booking your first test, book Academic.

Seven in every skill, and seven and a half overall

The minimums are at least 7.0 in each testing area and an overall score of at least 7.5, and both have to hold at once. Four skills at 7.0 average 7.0, which is below the overall figure, so at least one skill has to sit above 7.0 to lift the overall band to 7.5. Three skills at 7.0 and one at 8.0 average 7.25, and IELTS rounds an average ending in .25 up to the next half band, so that profile reaches 7.5. One test, and the most recent one

The GMC requires that you achieved these scores in the same test and in your most recent sitting of the test. The first condition rules out putting together your best skills from two different sittings. The second is easy to miss: if you already hold a qualifying result and sit IELTS again, the new sitting becomes your most recent one, and it is the one the condition is read against. Sit again only when you mean to replace the result you have.

The paperwork

The GMC asks for the test report form, with its number and original stamp. To use the result to book PLAB part 1, you enter your scores in the My Tests section of your GMC Online account, adding the test report form number of a One Skill Retake if you took one. The GMC then sends the scores for verification, which it says could take up to two working days, so leave that time before you plan to book.

Academic, 7.0 in all four, 7.5 overall, one test, your latest sitting: check all five on your own test report form before you apply.

The GMC accepts IELTS One Skill Retake, which not every UK regulator does, but only under conditions it lists, and a retake booked without checking them can cost a fee for a result that does not count. Where you do not achieve the GMC's minimum in one section of the full test, the GMC will accept a One Skill Retake pass in that section that achieves the required score. The Nursing and Midwifery Council, by contrast, lists One Skill Retake among the versions it does not accept, which our page on IELTS for UK nursing covers.

The conditions

The GMC says you are eligible for One Skill Retake only once, and only if you meet all of its requirements:

• you completed the full test at a centre that offers IELTS One Skill Retake;
• you sit the One Skill Retake within 60 days of that full test;
• your full test was IELTS on computer, because One Skill Retake is not available after the online or paper-based tests.

So the route opens only after a computer-delivered test, and only once. If your full test was on paper or online, or the 60 days have passed, the options that remain are a new full test or another kind of evidence the GMC accepts, such as OET.

How the plan reacts

Your CEFR level on Liguastic is set by the placement and does not move when you finish lessons; your band estimate moves with every essay and recording you hand in. A missed result at a test centre changes neither by itself. Keep handing in the skill that was short and judge the run rather than the last figure. The AI tutor knows your level, your next step and the points you keep missing, and it can set exercises on the weak point inside the chat and mark them there, though it cannot change your plan. If listening was the skill that fell short, remember that Liguastic offers clip work from a finite approved bank rather than a course, and arrange outside material early rather than late.

Check how your full test was delivered before you book a retake, count the 60 days from the full test, and remember that the retake is open once.

An IELTS certificate is valid for two years for the GMC, and the date it has to be valid on is different for PLAB and for registration.

For PLAB part 1

If you are taking the PLAB test, your certificate must be valid on the day you sit PLAB part 1. You submit the scores through the My Tests section of GMC Online, and they are verified before they count, which the GMC says could take up to two working days.

For registration with a licence to practise

If you are applying for registration, the certificate must be valid when the GMC approves your application. Approval comes after you apply, so a result that is valid on the day you submit can still run out while the application is being considered. Count forward from your test date rather than back from the day you submit.

If your certificate is more than two years old

The GMC describes two ways forward. For PLAB, it may accept your IELTS certificate together with references from a tutor or lecturer of a postgraduate course, or from an employer, in a country where English is the first and native language, and those references must cover at least three months of full-time study or employment within the last two years. For registration, it may extend the certificate's validity on the strength of a recent PLAB pass if both of these are true: your IELTS or OET certificate was less than three years old on the date your application was received, and you passed PLAB 2 less than three months before that date. If you do not meet both, the GMC says it may consider additional evidence that you have kept your English up to date, such as your test report form number with references of the same kind.

The visa is a separate question

The GMC states that IELTS may not be acceptable evidence of your English for a UK visa, and tells you to check the requirements of UK Visas and Immigration. Meeting the GMC's figure answers the regulator, not the Home Office, and our page on IELTS for UK visas covers the visa side.

Two years from the test, valid on the PLAB 1 day or on the day the GMC approves you, and a separate check for the visa.

IELTS is one of several kinds of evidence the GMC accepts, and for some doctors it is not the most direct one.

OET

The GMC accepts the Occupational English Test, medicine version, on paper, on computer or as OET@Home, with at least grade B in each testing area, speaking, listening, reading and writing, achieved in the same test and in your most recent sitting, on a certificate that shows your candidate number. If you use OET to book PLAB part 1, the GMC asks you to enter the scores in My Tests and to select the General Medical Council as your recognising organisation in the My OET portal, so it can verify them. Liguastic does not prepare the OET paper, and that is a real reason to look elsewhere for it.

The other chapters of the GMC's guide

The GMC's guide to evidence of your knowledge of English also has chapters on using your primary medical qualification, providing a reference from your employer, using a UK job offer and using other types of evidence. Each has its own conditions, and the GMC notes that the evidence needed to apply for PLAB may be different from the evidence needed for registration, so read the chapter that fits your situation before you decide a test is the route you need.

If a test is your route, the GMC reads either IELTS Academic at 7.0 and 7.5 or OET medicine at grade B, each from a single sitting of its own.

Writing

The GMC asks for at least 7.0 in writing, and this is the surface built for it. You write a Task 2 answer and hand it in. It comes back scored on four criteria in half bands, with up to six corrections that quote your exact words, give a better version and a one-line reason, and one next focus rather than a list of everything. You can rewrite it, and the second draft comes back compared with the first: which flagged problems you resolved and which are still there. Corrections go to a notebook you can re-read. Speaking

The GMC asks for at least 7.0 in speaking, the same figure as the other three skills. On Liguastic you get a Part 2 cue card at your level, record your answer in the browser, and pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary and grammar come back as bands read from the audio, with the phrases that cost you quoted back. Part 1 appears in the placement, where two recorded turns are scored from the audio; Part 3 is not covered anywhere. Reading

The GMC asks for at least 7.0 in reading. Liguastic's reading is a timed mock: one passage, up to ten multiple-choice questions, fifteen minutes. It is scored on a fixed ratio ladder running from 2.5 to 9 that every track shares, so what comes back is a reading-accuracy estimate rather than an IELTS score, and it should be read as a check on speed and accuracy rather than as a prediction. It is shorter than the real reading paper, which is worth remembering when you plan your pacing.

Listening

The GMC asks for at least 7.0 in listening, and this is where Liguastic is thinnest. Listening is measured at placement. Afterwards you draw an approved clip at your own listening level, play it as many times as you like, and your answers are marked on the server against a key the browser never receives, with the transcript released after you answer. It is not taught as a course, it does not move your CEFR level, and because every clip is human-approved rather than generated the bank can run out and says so instead of dealing you a clip you have already answered. If listening is the skill standing between you and the GMC's figure, budget for outside material as well, starting with the exam body's own preparation resources.

Two skills marked in detail, one measured on a timer, one measured and then practised from a finite bank, and a plan written to your band and your date rather than picked from a menu.

Liguastic publishes no time-to-band figure, because there is not an honest one to publish. How long this takes depends on where the placement finds you, how far each skill sits from the GMC's minimum, and how much you write and record each week. What the platform does instead is project the plan forward from today and report whether the last step lands before, on or after the test date you entered.

What the placement decides

The placement returns a CEFR level per skill and names the skills it could not grade rather than leaving them blank, and it includes two recorded speaking turns scored from the audio. Listening is measured here too. Your level is set by that result: finishing lessons never moves it, so a good week does not inflate it and a bad one does not deflate it. The plan is written from those figures and, on the IELTS course, from the target band and any test date you gave.

How the plan uses your test date

One step is open at a time, and the plan reports whether it finishes before, on or after your date. You can swap a step's skill or add a step after it, but you cannot rearrange the plan, which is deliberate: the sequence is the part doing the work. Exam Day runs the reading mock and a timed essay under the clock with no pausing and returns one combined estimate, and it is worth using more than once as the date approaches. Misses from lessons, practice and the placement come back at 1, 3, 7 and 21 days as a fresh question on the same point, so the last weeks are largely your own errors returning. How to read a run of estimates

A single band estimate is one reading from our grader. Several in a row carry far more information than any one of them. Three Task 2 essays over two weeks tell you whether task response is moving; four recordings tell you whether the figure that shifts is pronunciation or fluency. Judge the trend and the criterion, not the last number, and remember that the GMC needs four separate minimums and a 7.5 overall from the same sitting rather than one good average.

Count back from your test date yourself, hand in more than one of everything, and treat the weakest of your four skills as the schedule.

There are two costs, and they are unrelated: the exam, paid once per sitting to a test centre, and the preparation, paid monthly or yearly to Liguastic through Creem.io.

The exam

The IELTS fee is set by the test centre and differs by country, and no single figure covers the Gulf, the Levant and North Africa. We could not verify a current fee for your country on the exam body's own pages on the day this page was written, so this page states none: open the IELTS booking pages, choose your city, and read the fee the centre publishes before you commit. Ask the centre in the same visit what a resit costs, whether it offers One Skill Retake after IELTS on computer, and how soon you can sit again, because all three are set locally.

Liguastic

What a doctor actually needs to buy

If you are preparing for the GMC you want the IELTS course rather than General English, because General English carries no band at all and reports CEFR movement instead. Everything that is finished is inside the IELTS course, including the AI tutor, so there is nothing further to add on top of it. Modules that are still coming soon cannot be bought, and the Advanced Listening module is one of them.

The exam is paid per sitting to a centre you choose, the preparation stops the month you cancel, and nothing on this page is a figure you cannot open and read for yourself.

Before you buy anything, the limits, at the same size as the offer.

• Listening is practised, not taught. It is measured at placement, then practised from a bank of approved clips at your level: play a clip as often as you like, answers are marked on the server, transcript afterwards. There is no listening lesson and no listening curriculum, it does not move your level, and because every clip is human-approved rather than generated the bank can run out. The GMC asks for 7.0 in this skill, and that is a gap you have to fill from outside.
• OET is not prepared here at all. The GMC accepts the medicine version, and Liguastic does not teach it.
• PLAB is not prepared here. Liguastic prepares the English test the GMC reads. PLAB is the GMC's own assessment, and preparing for it lies outside this platform.
• Nothing here is an official score. Every band is an estimate from our own grader, no examining body has reviewed a single number, and there is nowhere to submit one. Liguastic has no affiliation with IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge or ETS. See how scoring works.
• Speaking Part 3 is not covered, and Task 1 is set only once. Part 1 appears in the placement, Part 2 is the practice cue card, and Writing Task 1 appears in the placement paper and nowhere else.
• TOEFL is not open to new learners. The GMC's guide gives its test chapters to IELTS and OET, so for this goal it changes nothing.
• No part of the PLAB or registration application is handled here. Liguastic prepares the language test. The GMC's own pages are where the application, the evidence and the assessment live.
